The Music:
Interlocking, polyrhythmic melodies create high-spirited, percussive music like the sounds heard in Zimbabwe, Africa – the roots of our study.
The Instruments:
The marimba is a large xylophone-type instrument with broader and lower tonal range and resonators. The baritone and bass marimba are so large that musicians play them from elevated platforms. Traditional arrangements performed on a set of seven marimbas as in Zimbabwe, Fort Collins MARIMBA also creates ensembles of three and four instruments for street performances and smaller venues.
The Players:
Students of all ages play together, from grade schoolers to adults, often times multiple members of families – cooperatively interlocking simple and sophisticated parts that collectively create complex sounds, rhythms and pieces. Multigenerational performers are brightly clad in African Dashikis, creating a truly unique experience enjoyable to audiences of all ages.
